The Hungry Caterpillar

Updated: May 17

We did a hungry caterpillar day. Finley enjoyed learning about the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly.

Here's a list of the activities we did:

1. Watched 'The very hungry caterpillar'- By Eric Carle

(Here's a youtube link to it- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY)

I cut out coloured circles to make a long caterpillar on the floor and then printed the food etc- these are in the images below. Finley had to add the food in order on the caterpillars body.

2. Caterpillar lunch.

This would be easier if Finley ate more fruit and veg but unfortunately we had to work with his very limited diet. All you need is a circle cutter and a bit of creativity.

3. Caterpillar by threading.

Easy enough to do. I used toilet roll cut up into body segments, colored them and used a pip cleaner to thread onto. Add some finishing touches like the face and you have a cute caterpillar. It's also great for Finley who is developmentally delayed to practice them fine motor skills. For older children, consider using beads!

4. Experimental painting.

I was going for the finished design to look like caterpillar trails but trying to engage Finley in painting can be challenging. So I decided to incorporate one of his favorite things- vehicles! But you could really use almost anything you have, maybe sticks or string.

5. Decorating butterflies- Mummy did a bit of prep work on this one!

Firstly by cutting some butterflies out of ordinary paper (or any paper) choose some appropriate photos (some you don't mind cutting up!). Cut around the person and leave to on side. Decorate the paper butterflies, wait to dry, attach the photo! I laminated Finley's and stuck then with the caterpillar trails. It's a symbol of how you have to make a few caterpillar tracks before turning into a butterfly.
